WNBA Preview: Draft Results & What's Ahead

It’s officially been two weeks of WNBA games—and it’s been just as messy, chaotic, and fun as we all hoped.
We’ve seen surprise contenders, exciting rookies, confused vets, drama, injuries, and more “what is this coach doing??” moments than I can count. Basically: perfect W.

Reminders for the season:
🟣 Limit arguments with misogynists, conservatives, and homophobes- they’re still on the yellow brick road looking for brains
🟣 Support your faves, call out the BS, and enjoy the mess.
🟣 Happy Pride to all the gays! May your jumpers be wet and your haters in shambles. #AnAlly

Let’s keep the chaos going 💅🏾🏀

Fred’s Power Rankings

New York Liberty 7-0

On Top Where They Belong The Liberty are my top-ranked team this time around — and for good reason. They've not only come back strong, but they've come back better. In what I believe will prove to be the most consequential move of the offseason, the trade for Natasha Cloud has transformed this team. Her presence has made the Liberty ten times stronger and more dynamic.

Cloud has hit the ground running, having the best start to a season of her career. She’s a +45 so far, averaging 18.7 points, 7.7 assists, 5.7 rebounds, 2.7 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game. That’s insane. She fits this team like a glove. Bringing the energy needed to close out games, filling in when one of the Big Three has an off-shooting night, and locking down on defense like the elite player she is.

Even beyond the stats, Cloud has done wonders for team chemistry. This is the most fun I’ve seen the Stewie & JJ era have. And with Cloud in the mix, it feels like they’re just getting started.

Nekias Duncan put it perfectly in his recent article:

Cloud can be the best version of herself in New York; her drives are additive, not dire. Her defensive versatility is a bonus, not a necessity to a flawed group (sorry, Phoenix). Her shotmaking is a bonus, not a bellwether.

More pressing, Cloud has been the best version of herself to start the year.

Nekias Duncan

This past week, we beat the Valkyries twice—the second game really highlighting how much we need Jonquel Jones to be a truly elite team. In game 2 against the Valks, JJ was out with a sore hamstring. We managed to pull out the win, but it was a battle. We blew past the Washington Mystics and demolished the Connecticut Sun with a dominant 100–52 victory. This is not only the best I’ve seen the team play, but also the most fun I’ve seen them have, and Nyara isn’t even playing right now due to a re-aggravated knee injury.

Players to watch:

Kennedy Burke is also off to a great start this season. She looks more confident on both ends of the floor, poised offensively and locked in defensively, and she’s stepping up beautifully to fill the gap left by Kayla Thornton. As I said before, we might be witnessing Most Improved Player and/or Sixth Player of the Year-level play from KB. She’s making a serious impact every time she hits the court.

Sabrina may be off to a slower start this year, but she’s still making her presence felt through her playmaking. With Stewie, JJ, and Cloud all playinbg at a high level, plus strong contributions from the supporting cast, Sab doesn’t have to be at her peak just yet. She’s adjusting to playing more off the ball with Cloud taking on primary point guard duties, and it’s clear the team is still settling into their new roles. But no worries: Sab will lock in soon. It’s only a matter of time.

Minnesota Lynx 7-0

Revenge Tour Starting Strong The Lynx brought back their starting five and added key pieces in Jessica Shepard and Karlie Samuelson. Simply put, these mfers are good at basketball. Napheesa Collier is already playing at an MVP level. While the team has had some slow starts, they’ve consistently rallied with strong finishes, and they’ve done all of this without Kayla McBride for the first 4 games.

Courtney Williams opened the season strong, racking up 19 assists with zero turnovers — a huge feat considering her past struggles with ball control. She’s also stepped up her scoring. After a rough few games, she seems to be finding her form again.

Jessica Shepard, who sat out the 2024 season, is making an immediate impact in her return. Whether it’s scoring, rebounding, playmaking, or defending, she’s doing a bit of everything off the bench. She filled in as a starter while Alanna Smith was out and now plays a key role in the second unit. Shepard is giving serious Sixth Player of the Year energy — she’s their Kayla Thornton in terms of grit and versatility.

Napheesa is playing out of her mind, and it honestly looks effortless. I won’t lie—the Lynx and the Liberty seem miles ahead of the competition, which really gives their players room to flex. Phee missed the game against the Phoenix Mercury due to knee soreness. I hope it’s not serious, but it’s been a recurring issue for her. Still, the Lynx pulled off a 15-point comeback, and Natisha Hiedeman sealed the win with a game-winning three. (another 6POY candidate)

This team may start slow, but they always finish strong.

Atlanta Dream 5-2

IN AN ATTEMPT TO BE AS LOUD AS THE DISRESPECT, I AM HERE TO APOLOGIZE TO ONE, RHYNE HOWARD. I WAS WRONG!!!! YOU ARE, IN FACT, LIKE THAT!! I SEE THE VISION!

The Atlanta Dream are firing on all cylinders and look fantastic. Allisha Gray and Rhyne Howard are playing out of their minds. This is an All-Star, All-WNBA-level year for Lish. She is currently third in the league in points scored, second in three-pointers made (tied with Rhyne), and is averaging 21.4 points per game, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. She has my vote for Eastern Player of the Week for sure.

Rhyne has taken over the role of PG while Jordin Canada is out and has been defending at an All-Defense level—averaging 17 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 5 assists per game. She’s guarding the other team’s best guard on a nightly basis and is shutting folks down. Meanwhile, Brionna Jones is holding it down in the paint with consecutive double-doubles and is currently averaging 13.7 points while shooting 43.9% from the floor, along with 10 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and one block in 31.9 minutes per game. She’s also hit career highs in three-point attempts and makes (thanks, Smesko lol).

The Dream’s role players—Nia Coffey, Te-Hina Paopao, and Naz Hillmon—have been excellent, providing defense and shotmaking. When Jordin Canada gets back from injury, this offense will really be humming.

BG had a strong couple of games to start, but due to injury and just poor play, she hasn’t looked her best. This doesn’t seem to make much of a difference in ATL’s ability to win. If they can figure out a way to maximize BG, we need to start talking about this team like they’re a contender.

The Dream had some signature wins over these past few games, including a 17-point comeback against Seattle on May 30th behind Rhyne’s 33 points and Allisha’s career-high 28 points. They also had decisive wins against the Sparks, Sun, and Wings. This is a good team, and I can’t wait to see them play against the Libs, Lynx, Phoenix, and Aces to see how they hold up.

@wnba

RHYNE HOWARD DAGGER🗡️ #wnba #rhynehoward

Phoenix Mercury 5-2

Another thing I have to apologize for: Saying the Mercury would be shitty lol. They are good!

Kahleah Copper has been out after getting some sort of knee cleanup. Despite this (and the fact that Natasha Mack is also out), the Merc have been rolling, led by Satou Sabally and Alyssa Thomas.

I was very skeptical if we were ever going to see peak Satou again, but after a full year of recovery and getting back into shape, Satou is playing some great basketball. She’s currently averaging 21.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per game. She led the Mercury in erasing an 18-point deficit to beat the Sparks this past Sunday, without Alyssa Thomas. If she keeps playing at this level, I can see her having an All-WNBA season. (She’s also a possible candidate for Western Player of the Week, IMO.)

They did trick off a huge lead with some horrendous late-game execution against the Lynx. However, it’s the Lynx—they tend to make teams do that.

Alyssa Thomas is playing like Alyssa Thomas, being a dominant force as both a point guard and in the paint. She and Satou make a great pair and can absolutely dominate games. Again, this is all without Kah!

The real story here, though, is how amazing Phoenix’s role players have been. I was talking a lot of shit about the GM and coach out there, but they’ve put together a great supporting cast for their stars—including players who hadn’t even had their shot in the WNBA yet. Twenty-nine-year-old rookie Kathryn Westbeld, 23-year-old rookie Monique Akoa Makani, and 25-year-old Lexie Held have all proven they can excel in their roles despite lacking prior WNBA experience. Sami Whitcomb has also been playing the best she has in her years in the WNBA, this is following an MVP and Championship season in Australia’s WNBL.

UPDATE: They signed Haley Jones to a rest-of-season contract, which I thought was just a hardship deal. But after typing this, I looked at my phone and saw they waived Sevgi Uzun. No wonder they said she was going to EuroBasket lol. But seriously, she wasn’t that good, and in one game, Haley already looked a lot better at the point guard position. Hopefully, this is a system that Haley gets a chance to thrive in.

Seattle Storm 3-4

The Storm have redeemed themselves after getting obliterated in their first game of the season. However, while there are bright spots, there are also some glaring issues that are stopping them from closing out games.

Bright spots: Nneka is in her 14th season and is balling out. She’s a dominant force in the paint, averaging 18.6 points and 9.8 rebounds. To me, she’s the steady presence on the floor who keeps the Storm anchored, even with a few recent low-scoring games. She provides the leadership piece they need. Other vets like Skylar and Gabby are also doing their part to contribute to the team.

I have to highlight Erica Wheeler, man. What a surprise her performance has been. Maybe recency bias clouded my judgment since she was stuck on those horrible Fever teams for a while and then barely saw playing time once Caitlin arrived. On the Storm, she brings scoring, defensive stops, and playmaking as a PG. She’s been so good that I think she needs to be inserted into the starting lineup stat—but even if she stays off the bench, she has a real shot at 6POY.

Li Yueru and Zia Cooke are providing good minutes off the bench!

Low light: Last season, Ezi was a double-double and shot-blocking machine. Her offensive output this season has left a lot to be desired and has truly hindered the Storm. There are a couple of games they would’ve won if Ezi had just scored 10–15 points. I imagine she’s tired after a dominant overseas season in Europe, so hopefully she’ll show up to the party soon.

Lexie Brown. That’s the whole sentence.

Alyesha Clark is in a nasty slump and looks way worse than she did last year.

The Storm cannot close a damn game! They’ll build huge leads and then allow teams to come back and beat them, or they can’t complete a comeback themselves. They let the Atlanta Dream erase an 18-point deficit, and just yesterday they cut the Aces’ lead to 3 but couldn’t tie it up. This is their Achilles heel, and honestly, I don’t think they can overcome it without more offense from Ezi.

Las Vegas Aces 4-2

Despite having a better record than the Storm, I have the Aces ranked below them because they simply look B-A-D. Even in wins.

A’ja Wilson is still the best player in the world, but the burden is a bit heavier this year with the departure of Kelsey Plum. For the first couple of games, it was relatively easy to slow A’ja down because she didn’t have much help from anyone else. I mean, the defense was bad, A’ja was leading in assists—with Chelsea Gray on the team—Jewell was still cold, there was no help outside of Dana Evans from the bench, and Kiah Stokes and KB are still on the damn team. They’ve been unrecognizable from the dominant squad we’ve come to know.

With that being said, there will never be a day I count the Aces out—not with Jackie Young, A’ja Wilson, and Chelsea Gray still on the roster. Lately, they’ve looked a touch better, pulling out a dominant win against the Sparks and a revenge game against the Storm. They still need to be more disciplined on defense and take care of the ball, but you can see—little by little—they’re figuring it out. Maybe soon, Jackie and A’ja will finally get some adequate help.

Also, A’ja put up 35 pts, 13 rebs, 6 ast, 3 steals, and 3 blks on 12-18 shooting game. This is the best player in the world, man. She is an alien.

Indiana Fever 2-4

Now here is a team I was right about! THIS IS NOT A FINALS TEAM. PERIOD. ADDING MULTIPLE 33+ YEAR OLDS IS NOT HELPING ANYONE!

Now, the Fever get this spot above the Mystics largely because the Fever are injured—their engine, Caitlin Clark, is out with a quad injury. Sophie Cunningham is also out again after injuring her ankle, as well as Syd Colson.

Without CC, they are lost. I asked this before the season: who is the backup PG? Like, for real. You can’t expect to win a chip with Syd Colson and Sophie as your backup PGs. They’re not good enough. Syd is a turnover machine who offers okay offense. Sophie is hurt and completely out of rhythm when she does play. Kelsey Mitchell is also not a playmaking guard, so she either dribbles the air out of the ball or makes a bad pass.

My biggest ICK with this team is Stephanie White. I’ve never seen her this out of sorts and whiny while coaching??? She was not bitching about fouls or drawing up horrendous end-of-game plays in Connecticut. Remember, the Sun started 9–0 last season! She needs to straighten up because the Fever fans will come for her head. I’m confused by Steph White’s refusal to commit to playing through Aliyah Boston during this time. AB has taken a huge leap and is putting up insane numbers this season, yet when CC is out, they still aren’t playing through her? She does have a tendency to get into foul trouble, which takes her out of games—but still.

Vets DB and Howard have been inconsistent. Howard will give you a great first half, and then get benched for some random reason, like in the game against the Mystics. She had 10 at the half and only 1 point in the second. I’m not sure if that’s bad play or bad utilization by the coaching staff. DB, on the other hand, has looked completely out of sorts. She went from being a starter and a focus on offense to a bench player. They don’t do anything to get DB going, so when she comes in, she’s cold, and then she gets benched. She did briefly look like her old self when she hit three back-to-back threes to pull the Fever within 3 of the Sun (they still lost).

Finally, I fully think Kelsey Mitchell is underselling just how much her fractured finger (on her shooting hand) has affected her. She played through it in China and has been ever since, but her game is so off. Her threes aren’t falling, she’s inefficient, and she’s been exposed without CC on the floor. Hopefully, she gets better soon.

Overall, CC still makes this team a playoff contender—but few want to admit she’s also going through a sophomore slump, much like her 2024 class peers. Her shooting is off, the turnover rate is through the roof, and yet she still finds ways to will her team to wins. It’s early in the season, and they’re basically a new team with a new staff. They can grow and gel together to become a real threat.

Bright Spots: Lexie Hull, Aliyah Boston, sometimes Damiris Dantas

UPDATE: Aari McDonald was signed to a hardship contract, as the Fever only have 10 players available due to injury. Her PG skills will be a godsend.

@indianafever

this bucket from Lexie Hull was smooth 😮‍💨 #wnba #indianafever @lexiehull

Washington Mystics 3-4

The Mystics have surprised everyone—not only are they a fun team to watch, but they’ve also been competitive! Their young talent, paired with some key veteran pieces, has made this team look really good. New head coach Sydney Johnson is also my current front-runner for Coach of the Year (if Cheryl or Sandy don’t snag it).

Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron should be everyone’s frontrunners for Rookie of the Year. These two came in WNBA-ready. Kiki is banging in the post without fear, Sonia is showing impressive playmaking skills, and both have stepped up as leaders despite their young age. Even though Aaliyah Edwards and Shakira Austin have been hurt, I think it’s going to be hard for them to get their minutes back from these two rookies. It’s scary to think how good this team could be if Georgia Amoore hadn’t torn her ACL.

Brittney Sykes is also having a great start to the season, leading the team in points and assists while ranking second in rebounds. She’s probably the most athletic player in the league—jumping out of the gym, finishing with flair, and consistently putting her body on the line for the team.

Jade Melbourne, Sug Sutton, and Stef Dolson are also chipping in with points, defense, and playmaking. And when healthy, Shakira Austin is an absolute force in the paint. I really hope she can stay on the floor this season.

That said, I am wondering: what’s Aaliyah Edwards’ place on this team now? Since her injury, Kiki and Sonia have stepped into the starting lineup, and their tandem seems too good to break up or bench. What does that mean for Edwards, who is dominant in her own right? The Mystics are stacked with forwards, and it’ll be interesting to see whether they keep all of them moving forward. Honestly, I can seriously see them moving Shakira—but who knows?

@washmystics

Kiki, the woman that you are!!!

@washmystics

TOUGHHH Shakira Austin!!!

Golden State Valkyries 2-4

The United Nations, err, I mean Golden State, looks exactly how they’re supposed to look right now. Full of potential, but also kind of bad?

Bright Spot: They have vets who know what they’re doing in Kayla Thornton, Veronica Burton, Tiff Hayes, and Monique Billings. I guess Julie Vanloo counts as a vet, too. This group keeps them in games, offers leadership, and shows the potential of this roster. But honestly, it’s like having a team of Ringo Starrs and George Harrisons. They need a Paul or John ASAP.

The international rookies are looking better and better each game, led by standout Janelle Salaün, who is showing real promise as a post player. She put up her first double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds against the Liberty last Thursday. That’s exciting progress.

Low Light: The glaring issues for this team lie in their undisciplined defense, which constantly puts them in foul trouble. They also have an obsession with the three despite always missing them (9/34 yesterday!!!) Most importantly, they don’t have a star player. No one on this team can just take over and win the game, and that has resulted in them losing leads and falling short in close matchups.

Still, I wouldn’t overreact. This is exactly where a new franchise should be. They are developing talent, finding their identity, and most importantly, leading the league in attendance. There is real promise here. They just need time and a star to build around.

Los Angeles Sparks 2-4

The Sparks should be doing a lot better than they are.

Right now Kelsey Plum is on a tear, leading the league in scoring and three-pointers made, yet the Sparks have only won two of their six games. It feels like they’ve actually gotten a little worse now that the offense has shifted from being built around Hamby to being built around Plum. This isn’t surprising since new coach Lynn Roberts favors a five-out offense and relies heavily on the three-point shot.

With Rae Burrell and Rickea Jackson out due to injury and personal reasons, and Cam Brink also missing, the lack of depth is definitely noticeable. Hamby and Plum have remained steady, but the supporting cast has been inconsistent. I will say Odyssey Sims has been solid and even put up a 30-piece for the first time since 2016. The issue is that I don’t think Lynn trusts Sims enough, which could be holding them back. That 30-piece came after Lynn benched Sims yesterday in favor of Julie Allemand, who had just returned from injury.

Azura Stevens has also been inconsistent, putting up some strong 20+ games, then disappearing in others with single-digit scoring and rebounding.

Because of all this, the Sparks are struggling to maintain leads or mount comebacks. This seems to be a league-wide problem, but what separates winning teams from the rest is the ability to both protect a lead and rally when they’re behind.

I hope they can figure out how to fit Rickea and Rae into this five-out system, because those two have real skill in the midrange and deserve more investment. They are the Sparks’ future and should be supported accordingly.

Chicago Sky 2-4

The Sky have started this season very rocky. With a new team and coaching staff, they're still taking time to learn each other and mesh.

Angel and Kamilla haven’t had the best start to the year, but I think people are overreacting—as they tend to do when it comes to the Chicago Sky. From my point of view, we’re seeing the classic sophomore slump (aka teams now know how to guard them), we’re seeing them learn how to play with a top-tier point guard in Courtney Vandersloot, incorporate new pieces like Ariel Atkins, Bec Allen, and Kia Nurse, and reintegrate Elizabeth Williams, who missed most of last season with a knee injury.

Of course, they also have to adjust to a new coaching approach and philosophy under Tyler Marsh, who is still figuring out how to best use this roster.

Everyone started off slow, including Courtney and Ariel, but lately both have found their groove. Slooty is back to dishing out 6+ assist nights, and Ariel is finally becoming more decisive and increasing her offensive production instead of just passing. As for the starting lineup, I’m not sure why Kia Nurse is in there (talk about someone I was absolutely right about). She’s just not it. Bec Allen has a huge impact off the bench—I don’t know if that’s a minutes restriction thing to keep her healthy or if Tyler wants that spark off the bench, but either way, she’s making it work.

Some folks have floated benching Kamilla, which is just nuts. She needs time to adjust too, and we saw her play with more confidence in game one against Dallas.

Angel has been OK. Her assist numbers are up, and she’s still a strong rebounder, but her offensive game is struggling. Yes, she gets triple-teamed constantly in the paint, but she also misses wide-open layups. That’s the biggest area for growth right now.

Although both of their wins came against the Wings, it shows they can put together a complete game. The real question is whether they can do it against better teams.

Congrats to Slooty for passing her wife to become Chicago’s all-time leading scorer! (For what it’s worth, Allie did it in fewer games with better shooting efficiency.)

@chicagosky

YEAAAAAAA FIVE ‼️😮‍💨 #skytown

Connecticut Sun 1-6

The Sun are a rebuilding team, and they for damn sure look like it.

Led by Tina Charles, Marina Mabrey, and Olivia Nelson-Ododa, the Sun have managed to stay competitive in a few games—but they can never actually pull it off. And when they go up against elite teams? Blowouts. But honestly, this was expected. This is a team that lost nearly its entire roster, aside from Marina and ONO.

Marina has been extremely hit or miss. She loves to go off against the Fever and the Lynx (and I find that hilarious, like clockwork).

I do love what I’m seeing from rookies Saniya Rivers, Rayah Marshall, and Kariata Diaby. Aneesah Morrow has been injured but is working her way back—and I appreciate that she’s showing confidence in her outside shooting. That’s a skill she’s going to need to develop, since she really is an undersized 4/5.

Overall? This team is ass. But it’s early. Hopefully, they’ll become more fun to watch as their rookies grow and the rebuild continues

Oh, and they’re selling the team. My guess is it’s going to Boston.

Dallas Wings 1-6

Coach Ponytail is not good. I don’t know what is going on in Dallas, but it looks bad.

They’re at the bottom of the rankings because—despite Connecticut suffering the second-largest blowout in WNBA history—the Sun are a rebuilding team. The Wings are not. Dallas has the talent: Arike, Teaira, Dijonai, NaLyssa, Paige, etc. And yet… it’s just not clicking.

Arike… what’s going on, sister? She’s inconsistent and downright harmful when she goes into heroball mode and shoots Dallas out of games. The irony? Even when she is performing well and going off, they still lose. There are flashes where it looks like good basketball—like they’re about to turn a corner—and then it just… slips away.

Paige remains efficient, impactful, and steady, but she’s not making the kind of splash fans were expecting. To that I say: Dallas had the No. 1 pick for a reason.

I think Curt Miller needs to start coaching more and GM-ing less. Like, we need you on the floor, sir.

That said, the supporting cast hasn’t been awful. Ty Harris being out with a knee injury is a huge blow and definitely a reason they’ve struggled. Maddy is going through some sophomore slump-ish stuff—she just hasn’t found her rhythm coming off the bench.

NaLyssa and Dijonai both put up strong performances against Chicago and show the promise this team does have. Also, a lot of people had a lot to say about Teaira McCowan, but she’s proving just how important it is to have an elite center on your team. Glad she took all that outside noise and used it as fuel to show out.
